Maybe you have been wondering what the best dictionary software there is. I have a definite answer in mind to this question: it’s Lingoes.
Lingoes is like a platform for many dictionaries, so you can install many different (excellent) dictionaries and look up a word from all of them in just one click. This integration feature of Lingoes is outstanding since different dictionaries have their own strengths (for example, Oxford vs. Collins) so with Lingoes, you can enjoy the goods of each dictionary.
Lingoes is a very light and fast application, unlike many other dictionary softwares. Oxford Advanced Learners’ Dictionary takes up only 6 MB of your computer memory whereas the stand-alone OALD software by Oxford itself scoops up more than 500 MB of your computer resource. This compact size of Lingoes makes accommodating many dictionaries (and thesauri!) on your resource-scarce computer possible. Lingoes also starts up very quickly, and it can also capture the text on screen and translate the text instantly (I’ve been using this feature to stalk what my Chinese/Malay friends are talking about ^__^)
These are a few titles of my favorite dictionaries offered by Lingoes. Download them all!
- Oxford Advanced Learners’ Dictionary (Classic dictionary – I’ve been using it for 7 years now!)
- The Oxford Thesaurus (Your best destination to learn synonyms)
- Oxford Collocations Dictionary for Students (Learn how to use new words correctly)
- Cambridge Advanced Learners’ Dictionary
- Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary
- Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English
- Collins COBUILD Advanced Learners’ Dictionary
- MacMillan English Dictionary – American
